Donna Duquette, Owner

I’m often asked what made me decide to become a picture framer. The answer is simple—I was at the right place at the right time. Having worked for an engineering firm for more than 25 years, I found myself thinking that I’d like to try something different. I’d spent the first half of my career as a technical illustrator, eventually transitioning to computer information management. While I did enjoy my career and all of the challenges and successes that came with it, I missed my illustrating days. I often thought that I would never again have another job that I enjoyed as much or that made me feel as fulfilled.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt the need to make things; that it’s part of my self-expression. Whether it be by conventional means using tools and materials, or digitally with a keyboard and mouse, creating something gives me a sense accomplishment. I enjoy dealing with the unique challenges presented by each project. I view these challenges as a vital part of the creative process, each one presenting an opportunity to grow my skills and knowledge.

I knew that I needed to make a career change; knew what would make me happy. I needed to be making something or at least doing something more creative than data management. But, with no desire to start at entry level with another company, I could see no clear path to a more creative professional life. My painting and sewing hobbies would have to be enough for a while longer.

Then it happened! Early in 2014, while attending a friend’s gallery show at a local custom frame shop, I overheard the owner mention that she was thinking of closing and selling off her equipment. I knew immediately, without a doubt in my mind, that I would be the buyer. I spoke with my husband that evening, made an offer to the owner the next day, and apprenticed with her and another experienced framer that spring and summer.

I opened Affordable Framing LLC in August 2014 and haven’t looked back since. My only regret is that I didn’t start my own business sooner. I love what I do. I go to work and make things all day—in a business that I own. It does not get any better than that!

Today, my frame designs are known for their color harmony, simplicity and attention to detail. My design philosophy is that the framing must complement the artwork, but it should also harmonize with the other elements in the space where it hangs. I enjoy collaborating with my clients to create designs that they will enjoy for years to come.

If you’d like quality craftsmanship, creative and thoughtful design, and a fair price, stop by and see me at Affordable Framing LLC.
